Boosting Performance
Over time our computers tend to run slower and slower, the more you put on them, and the more you use them, the slower they inevitably become. There are a few ways to boost its performance. What we have detailed below are some useful tips, to help regain some of that speed your computer may of once had.
To keep your computer running at its optimum, you should really reformat every 12 months or so. In fact we recommend a reformat even more frequently if you use your computer for business, reformatting also allows you to elliminate any possible viruses. This is a relatively simple process, but does require that you backup your data in order to keep it.
There are a few other ways of increasing your computers performance, and some of these cost you nothing! One way to get an immediate boost is to add some extra memory. We can do this for free by using what is known as `Virtual Memory’. This kind of memory is not the actual physical RAM that is connected to your motherboard, but rather, a space on your hard drive that is dedicated to acting as extra memory.
It works by utilizing a folder that is known as the page file, this folder takes the over-flow when the RAM becomes full, and can’t accommodate any more data. The size of this file is determined by the amount of system memory (RAM) your computer has. You can increase the size of this page file, which then acts as extra memory.
So this page file is virtually extra memory! Hence the term: `virtual memory’.
Increasing virtual memory is like adding RAM, but it’s free!!
This process will make a marginal improvement, but for the optimal memory boost, you should add extra RAM and also reset the page file. To add RAM see: Upgrading RAM
